What you have to do is right click save as on the extension file, then open your chrome extensions page and drag and drop the .crx file you just downloaded there, which will let it install :)

It’s no bother at all! To add extensions from outside the chrome store, right click save as on the file of the extension you want to install, then open the chrome extensions page, and drag and drop the file for the extension you just downloaded there, and that’ll install it.

Ooh, I had the same issue with my usual youtube downloader extension last night when I was trying to download 24/seven, I had no idea that it was a vevo thing, good to know. What I did was disable the one I had installed (chrome youtube downloader) and just downloaded a different one (ultimate youtube downloader), and that one worked right away, so I would just try installing that one, and hopefully it should work :)
